Shock Transmission Unit(STU)

Description:-

The Shock Transmission Unit (STU) is a critical component in structural engineering, designed to mitigate the impact of seismic forces and vibrations on structures. It plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and stability of buildings and infrastructure during seismic events.

The STU is responsible for absorbing and dissipating the energy generated by ground motion, thereby protecting the structural integrity of the system it supports. It is an integral part of seismic retrofitting and construction projects in areas prone to earthquakes.

The installation and placement of the STU are of utmost importance. It must be positioned precisely, and its alignment must be rigorously checked to ensure it can effectively transmit loads and dampen vibrations. The use of appropriate materials and adherence to relevant codes and standards is crucial for its successful implementation.

Materials:-

The Shock Transmission Unit (STU) consists of various components, including elastomeric bearings, steel plates, and other structural elements. These materials are carefully selected to meet specific standards and requirements to ensure the STU's effectiveness in seismic isolation.

Elastomeric bearings are a key component of the STU, designed to absorb and dissipate energy during seismic events. These bearings are made of high-quality, unreinforced elastomers that meet industry standards such as ASTM D4014. They are often enclosed within steel cylinders for added durability.

Sealing rings and dust seals are used to protect the internal components of the STU from environmental factors and ensure long-term performance. These components are selected for their compatibility with the elastomeric materials and the surrounding environment.

The steel elements of the STU, including the structural steel plates and cast steel components, are chosen to meet standards such as ASTM A36 or equivalent specifications. Stainless steel may be used for parts that come into contact with elastomeric materials, ensuring corrosion resistance and longevity.

The overall assembly of the Shock Transmission Unit complies with international standards, including but not limited to ASTM, ISO, and local building codes that govern seismic safety. These standards are crucial to ensure the reliability and performance of the STU in protecting structures during seismic events.

Pot Bearings

Description:-

Pot Bearings are critical structural components used to support and facilitate movement in bridges and various other structures. They play a crucial role in distributing loads, accommodating thermal expansion, and reducing the impact of dynamic forces, allowing structures to remain stable and safe.

The design, manufacture, and testing of Pot Bearings must adhere to stringent codes and standards as directed by the consulting engineer and relevant authorities. These bearings are an essential part of many infrastructure projects and ensure the longevity and functionality of the structures they support.

Pot Bearings are designed to provide full and even contact with the bearing area. This precise placement is achieved by checking the level and alignment using spirit levels in all directions. To meet these requirements, epoxy mortar pads with a maximum thickness of 5 mm are often used between the bearing and the structure.

It is essential to ensure that the bottom of the structure's girders resting on top of the Pot Bearings is flat, and special care must be taken to prevent any displacement of the top plate of the bearing during the placement of the girders.

Materials:-

Pot Bearings typically consist of a metal piston supported by a disc or an unreinforced elastomer confined within a metal cylinder. These components are complemented by sealing rings and dust seals to protect the interior elements from external contaminants.

The sliding surface of Pot Bearings is often made of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), which smoothly interacts with a stainless steel mating surface. This combination ensures minimal friction and wear, as well as longevity in the bearing's functionality.

The complete assembly of Pot Bearings is manufactured using materials that comply with various international standards, including IS 2062, IS 1030, IS 6911, BS 3784, IS 3400, IS 226, and BS 5400. These standards ensure the structural integrity, durability, and performance of Pot Bearings in diverse applications.

The selection of materials and the precise manufacturing process are crucial in producing Pot Bearings that meet the stringent requirements of supporting heavy loads and providing the necessary movement and flexibility in infrastructure projects.

Spherical Bearing

Description:-

SPHERICAL Bearings are the most advanced and sophisticated support bearings available, providingcomplete structural freedom in rotation and horizontal sliding.

All Steel Auto Industries bearings are manufactured in accordance with BS 5400 & EN-1337.

Materials:-

Spherical Bearing bases and rockers use maintenance-free aluminium alloy. Sliding plates are made of structural Steel, faced with high quality stainless steel. Sliding surfaces are lined with pure PTFE to BS 3784.Pins for side restraints are special spring steel with minimum yield strength 1100 N/mm².

All permanently exposed steel parts are fully corrosion protected. Several different treatments are available, full Technical data on request.Full details of material specifications are available on request.

Design Sliding friction

The friction coefficient for PTFE is not constant but decreases with increasing direct stress. Spherical bearings are Permanently lubricated to reduce the Static coefficient of friction.

Lateral restraint

It is emphasised that only one Guide Spherical bearing at a support should be provided to resist a full transverse force, because it is not possible to position two bearings in a rigid structure to guarantee that such a force will be shared equally between them. Also, adequate vertical load must be present to ensure stability. We recommend consultation with our Engineer.

High rotation

± 3º (0.052 radians) in any plane.More than adequate for most structural purposes.

Removability

All bearings are designed to be removable with minimum jacking of the structure.
